My free play is on the Bal Orioles at 7:05 ET.
The LA Angels are coming off a 77-85 season in 2021 and the franchise's only World Series title came back in 2002. I'm sure it seems like even more than two decades ago to Angel fans, as the team has missed the postseason 11 times in the last 12 years. The Baltimore Orioles have missed the postseason in each of the last FIVE years, losing 100-plus games in THREE of the four full seasons, including tying Arizona for MLB's worst record in 2021 at 52-110.
However, the Orioles welcome the Angels to Camden Yards on a four-game winning streak, after completing a three-game home sweep of Texas. Baltimore stood 37-44 after 81 games (mid-point of the 162-game season), 10 games ahead of where the team was after 81 games in 2021 (27-34). Los Angeles came out strong to open the current season and through May 24th, was 27-17. That left them just ONE game behind the Astros in the AL West, who owned a 28-16 record on the same date. However, the Angels began a 14-game losing streak on May 25 that lasted through June 8. Los Angeles 'limped' into Miami on Tuesday for a two-game IL series with the Marlins and after a 1-1 split, are currently 38-44, 16 games behind Houston and well on its way to missing the postseason for the 12th time in 13 years.
Thursday's starters are rookie Chase Silseth (1-2, 5.23 ERA) for LA and Jordan Lyles (4-7, 4.70 ERA) for Baltimore. Silseth won his ML debut 2-0 over Oakland back on May 13 but over his last four, he's allowed 12 ERs on 21 hits in just 14.2 innings for a 7.36 ERA (he's 0-2 and LA is 0-4). Lyles has been around since 2011 and his lifetime record pretty much says it all. He's 58-86 with a 5.17 ERA and 1.43 WHIP. That includes the current season in which he's 4-7 with a 4.70 ERA and 1.41 WHIP over 16 starts (Orioles are 5-11).
It's hard to be overly confident while backing Lyles but he has pitched well at home in 2022, posting a 2.92 ERA in six starts, compared to a 5.89 ERA in 10 road starts. That said, Silseth has been pretty poor in his last four starts plus take note of the following. The Angel's beat Miami 5-2 last night behind Shohei Ohtani, giving the Angels a 5-1 record since the start of June with Ohtani on the mound, but 6-21 when anyone else starts. Take the Orioles.
Good luck...Larry
