’m taking the Las Vegas Raiders to cover the spread against the San Francisco 49ers in Thursday’s preseason finale. The biggest factor tilting me towards this pick is simply how the two teams are approaching the game. Kyle Shanahan said he doesn’t expect many, if any, San Francisco starters to play this game as the team tries to stay as healthy as possible before heading to Australia next week for the season opener. The 49ers also have over two-dozen players on injured reserve, which severely limits their depth.
Las Vegas will likely have a massive edge at quarterback once the backups roll in. Aidan O’Connell should play a majority of the game and brings plenty of NFL experience along with 17 career starts. He finished 15-of-24 last week for 166 yards and guided a 96-yard game-winning drive in Week 3’s 22-20 victory over the Houston Texans.
That experience will matter this week in a preseason finale. O’Connell will be fighting for a roster spot while possibly auditioning for other teams. A bunch of Raiders reserves will also be fighting for spots on the roster. Las Vegas has proven depth and outplayed the Texans, winning the yardage battle 400-219 despite trailing 20-3 at halftime.
The 49ers scored 41 points last week against the Chargers, but that offense was inflated by an 83-yard punt-return touchdown. San Francisco is going to roll out a far more reserve-heavy lineup on Thursday. Las Vegas is at home in Allegiant Stadium and has the more experienced backup quarterback situation, so I expect the Raiders to win this game once it starts trending in one direction.
