Week 6 ACC Football Power Rankings
October 5, 2009
After five weeks of the football betting season, it’s starting to become clear who the haves and have-nots are in the ACC. Let’s see who stacks up against who in this league with our ACC football power rankings. 1: Miami Hurricanes - Maybe “The U” is legit after all. If you had told HC Randy Shannon that he’d be a 3-1 team ranked in the Top-15 after going through a murderer’s row type of schedule to start the year, he’d probably take it. If the ACC has a real National Championship contender in it, Miami is probably the team in spite of the fact that it has already lost to Virginia Tech. Miami is a 38.5 point favorite at home this week against Florida A&M.
2: Boston College Eagles – With emotion playing on its side, the Eagles held off a late Florida State rally to become one of the ACC’s first four-win teams. For a team that was 80-1 in some locations to win the ACC, Boston College has done a heck of a job finding ways to win games this year. We’ll get more of a handle of what BC is all about after its trip to Blacksburg this week. Boston College is getting 14 points this week at Virginia Tech when looking at the latest football odds.
3: Wake Forest Demon Deacons – Wake Forest did a nice job of coming from behind early to beat a game NC State squad on Saturday afternoon. Though the Deacs have been an up-and-down squad all season, they haven’t been beaten by more than a field goal all season and could very legitimately be a 5-0 squad heading into this week’s contest. Wake Forest is a 10.5 point favorite this week against Maryland.
4: Clemson Tigers – Uh-oh. No excuses for this one, Clemson. As double-digit favorites, the Tigers laid a huge egg on the road at Maryland to drop to 2-3 on the year. Are the Tigers just another mediocre ACC team whose ultimate goal is finding a way to scrape to six wins to become bowl eligible? There may not be four more wins left on their ‘09 slate.
5: Duke Blue Devils – The Dookies are starting to get a lot closer to being able to play with the big boys in the ACC. They gutted it out for the entire game against Virginia Tech last week and were at least always within arm’s length in the game. It was a well-earned cover, but HC David Cutcliffe is going to want to see victories SU, not just ATS. Duke is getting 15.5 points on the road this week at NC State.
6: North Carolina State Wolfpack – Let’s take a moment and recognize Wolfpack QB Russell Wilson. He was picked off against Wake Forest last week, and that’s not something that happens every day. In fact, he held the NCAA record for most passes in a row without getting intercepted with nearly 400 of them! NC State may have lost, but it’s clear the future is bright in Raleigh as long as Wilson is under center.
7: Virginia Cavaliers
8: Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
9: Virginia Tech Hokies
10: North Carolina Tar Heels
11: Maryland Terrapins
12: Florida State Seminoles
