California has not lived up to their preseason expectations this season. The Bears were picked by many to take the Pac-10 crown, but those hopes were dashed after losing in back-to-back weeks to Oregon and USC. California has beat-up on a bunch of losing teams, and when facing solid competition, they’ve been out-played.
Oregon State is a solid team across the board. The Beavers are averaging 29 points on 409 yards of offense per game (versus teams that allow 24 ppg on 358 ypg). They run the ball well while gaining 4.0 yards per carry (versus teams that allow 3.9 ypc) and their passing game averages 272 yards per game on 7.6 yards per pass attempt (versus teams that allow 225 pypg on 7.2 yppa).
Defensively, California is playing just average football this season. They allow just 22 points per game (versus teams that average 22 ppg), but their yards per play numbers are weak. They are good against the run, but their secondary has been shredded a few times this year. They are allowing opponents to complete 63.3% of their passes for 267 yards on 7.5 yards per pass attempt (versus teams that average 59.4% for 212 pypg on 6.7 yppa). Overall, California allows 5.5 yards per play (versus teams that average 5.1 yppl).
California does have a strong offense, but they are facing a better than average Oregon State defense. The Beavers allow just 25 points per game (versus teams that average 26 ppg). Their rush defense is outstanding as they allow only 108 yards per game on 3.8 yards per rush (versus teams that average 146 rypg on 4.5 ypg). Overall, they allow just 5.7 yards per play (versus teams that average 5.9 yppl).
Oregon State has won and covered the last two meetings in this series. The Beavers are also on a strong 9-4 spread run as a road underdog, while California is just 2-4-1 against the spread this year. Oregon State is just as good as California, so taking a touchdown with the Beavers presents excellent value tonight.
Play OREGON STATE (+).
