How to Bet on Football
November 10, 2008
If you want to know how to bet on football then you’ll need to learn about straight bets, parlays, and teasers. These are just the main types of wagers placed at sportsbooks everywhere all through the season. All of these different types of action can be placed on NFL and college football games, so learn all you can so you don’t miss out on any chances to beat up on the sportsbooks this fall.
Straight Bets – You can place a wager on a specific team to win the game and cover the point spread. You will have to place $1.10 in bets for every $1 you want to win. If the game ends up in a tie then there is no action and your money is returned to your account. The point spread may move throughout the week as the odds makers try to adjust the action so it’s even on both sides. Let’s take a look:
Cleveland +6
Pittsburgh -6
If you want to back on Pittsburgh then the team will have to win by more than 6 points in order for you to win your bet. If Cleveland wins or Pittsburgh wins by less than 6 points then the people who bet on Cleveland win the money.
Totals – Another type of wager is the total bet. The odds makers set a number that they think both teams combined score will add up to. You can then bet the game to go “over” the total or “under” it. The juice is the same in that you have to bet $1.10 for every $1 you want to win.
Money Lines – The money lines are easy wagers because they only depend on who is going to win the game outright. If you think Pittsburgh is going to win over Cleveland, then you bet the money line. The number posted is how much you either have to wager, or you win. Let’s take a look:
Pittsburgh -350
Cleveland +275
If you want to bet on Cleveland to win outright then for every $1 you will win $2.75, but you don’t get the points like with straight wagers. If you want to bet on Pittsburgh then you will have to wager $3.50 to in $1.
Now you can parlay or tease your wagers to multiply your earnings. A parlay is when you put several teams together, but every game has to win in order for your wager to cash. The payouts depends on how many teams you put together in your wager, for example a 3-team parlay pays out 6 to 1, but all 3 games have to win.
Teasers are similar to parlays but the point spread is adjusted in your favor. There are 6 point, 6.5 points, and 7 point teasers which means how many points will be slid over to your side. The number of teams and points you take determines how much of a payout you are going to get on your bet. Ties will take your team down a level, so a 3 team will be a 2-team and so on.
