How to Bet College Football
June 7, 2010
This article is for those that are new to college football betting and want to learn how to bet college football. We’ll cover some of the most popular wager types and give an explanation of each. Let’s get started with the most common bet types.
Point Spread Betting: This is the standard college football bet that you’ll want to familiarize yourself with right away. Point spread betting works by placing a wager on either the favorite or the underdog. Favored teams will be represented by a negative number, which indicates how many points they are favored by. For example, Notre Dame -7 means that Notre Dame is favored by 7 points. If you bet on Notre Dame they would need to not only win the game, but win by more than 7 points. Underdogs are represented by a team with a positive number in front of their name. For example, Michigan +7 means that Michigan is a 7 point underdog. For your wager on Michigan to win, the Wolverines would need to win the game outright, or lose by less then 7 points.
Moneyline Betting: The most simple way to explain the moneyline is to say that you are simply picking who you think will win the game. The odds are adjusted so that if one team is heavily favored you have to risk a lot more money to win the same amount that you would if you took them on the point spread. Let’s say you see a moneyline of Ohio State -500. What this means is that you would need to wager $500 just to win $100, the upside is that if Ohio State is favored that heavily, they should win the game. The downside of course is that you could lose $500 and only have the opportunity to win $100. Now let’s say you see a moneyline of Florida State +250. This means that the Seminoles are the underdog and a wager of $100 would win you $250 if the Gators win outright. The upside here is that you can win more with a smaller wager, the downside of course is that you don’t get the points, FSU has to win the game outright.
Betting Totals: Totals are commonly called “over/under” bets. The total will be a set number of points and you simply bet on whether you think the total combined points for the game will be over or under than number. It’s as easy as that!
There are plenty of other wagering options, but what we’ve just covered are the most popular types of college football wagers.
