Green Bay’s Problems
November 12, 2009
What’s wrong with the Green Bay Packers? I was reading this article by Jackson Dworak on what work needs to be done by the Packers in order to get them back in shape, and thought he made some good points.
1. Management. He thinks the Ted Thompson era in Green Bay has been a disaster, since 2004 was his first year as GM and it was also Green Bay’s first losing campaign in 13 seasons. His draft history has been sketchy and he hasn’t done a good job of signing free agents (with the exception of Charles Woodson).
2. Attitude. The Packer players all seem to want high dollar contracts. The team also doesn’t have the determination to tackle like they mean it on every play. How about this stat: the Packers have only scored a touchdown once on drives that Aaron Rodgers has been sacked. Since he’s been put to the turf 37 times, that’s a lot of waste. Jackson thinks it’s because they take no pride in their work.
3. Coaching. Mike McCarthy isn’t a good motivator and players don’t get jacked up for their games. Jackson recommends giving McCarthy the ax especially after the let down last week to the winless Bucs. There are plenty of good names out there and Jon Gruden has a history with the organization.
4. Media Influence. The Packer players seem to pay too much attention to what is being said about them, when they are being hyped then they play lazy, and if they are underdogs then it’s like they give up. The Vikings game is an example. Brett Favre is one of the best passers in the history of the game, and Green Bay’s secondary bought into the hype and rolled over for him.
Can the Packers quickly rebuild? Can they become a Super Bowl contender in the near future? I guess we will have to wait until this offseason to find out.
