East Carolina at Tulsa Football Picks

Steve Merril continues to roll on Sunday when he posted the winner of the East Carolina at Tulsa.  Lots of other football handicappers focues on the NFL, where Merril took advantage of the football lines in the college game with the OVER here.  Take a look at why:

Tulsa is allowing only 23 points per game while holding teams to just over 380 yards per game.  They allow just over 120 rushing yards per game on only 3.3 yards per rush (versus teams that average 3.8 ypr).  Overall, their defense is allowing only 5.2 yards per (versus teams that average 5.3 yppl).

But those numbers were built upon their easy early schedule where they played 4 teams that have minimal offensive talent; with three of those teams ranking #111th or worse in scoring offense.  Since those games, the Tulsa defense has been exposed.  Against power teams Oklahoma and Boise St, Tulsa allowed 45 and 28 points on 529 and 380 yards of offense respectively.  In their last four games, they’ve allowed 27 points or more and 380 yards of offense or more in every game.

East Carolina’s offense has come around in recent weeks.  Toss out last week’s 3-point performance against Virginia Tech because the Hokies’ defense simply out-classed the Pirates.  They scored 49 and 38 points in the two weeks prior to the Virginia Tech game.  The Pirates gained close to a 1,000 yards in those games.  And they should continue that success against a Tulsa defense that has not performed well down the stretch.

Tulsa’s offense should also be able to move the ball and score points tonight on an East Carolina defense that is allowing 26 points per game on the road.  Tulsa has scored 21 points or more in five of their last six games.  They average a whopping 8.7 yards per pass attempt (versus teams that allow 7.6 yppa), and that fits nicely as East Carolina’s secondary is allowing 7.0 yards per pass attempt this season.
