Edwards Hit on Cribbs In the Last Play
November 17, 2009
How ugly was that hit on Josh Cribbs last night by Ravens defensive end Dwan Edwards. Edwards should probably be suspended and fined as this was the last play of the game, and Quinn threw a pass to Cribbs, who then began to run and and then lateralled the ball to tight end Robert Royal. Then unbeknownst to Cribbs, he was targeted by Edwards who went for Cribbs’ throat and smashed his arm right into Cribbs’ head, causing him to lie motionless on the field once the game was over.
Was this a retaliation play by the Ravens’ Edwards because Browns QB Brady Quinn was just trying to make a block earlier in the game and went a little too low and hit Ravens LB Terrell Suggs’ knees? Probably even though Quinn is a quarterback who normally doesn’t block big defensive players on a regular basis, so even after watching the reply of his block on Suggs, it looks like he was trying to block to the best of his ability without trying to hurt himself or another.
On the other hand, Edwards’ hit on Cribbs looked to be a direct result of him going after Cribbs and attacking his head rather than his body. This led to Cribbs being carted off the field and being taken to a local Cleveland hospital immediately. No word yet on the status of Cribbs’ injury, but Browns coach Eric Mangini did tell the media that Cribbs did have feeling and movement in all of his extremities, but you have to wonder if Cribbs’ season is finished, leaving the already struggling Browns without their best player.
