Alabama went 14-0 last year and won the national championship over the Texas Longhorns. They are the preseason favorite to win it all again in 2010. Nick Saban managed to win a title in his third year on the job, and he’s now 33-8 in his three seasons here. His recruiting skills are sure to be put to the test this year, especially on the defensive side of the ball where only two starters return. Their will have to rely on an offense that should be explosive this season with eight returning starters early.

I’m going to preview the Crimson Tide below, as well as list my predictions on this team. If you want to know how this conference plays out as a whole, then take a look at my 2010 SEC football predictions article. By looking at the college football odds, Alabama is almost a shoe-in to reach the SEC Championship game this year.

Offense:

Alabama put up 32.1 points per game and 403.0 total yards per contest last season. With eight returning starters on offense, there’s no reason to think they can’t match and exceed those numbers. QB Greg McElroy is the real deal, RB Mark Ingram won the Heisman Trophy last year, and at wide receiver Julio Jones and Marquise Maze each get overlooked because this is a run-first offense. Ingram rushed for 1,658 yards and 17 touchdowns a year ago, and his backup Trent Richardson chipped in 751 yards and 8 scores in 2009.

The offensive line returns 14-game starters in C William Vlachos, RG Barrett Jones and LT James Carpenter. McElroy has never lost as a starter, throwing for 2,508 yards and 17 touchdowns last year. But Alabama will rely heavily on their running game once again after rushing for 215.1 yards in 2009. But look for them to open up the playbook a little with Jones and Maze on the outside.

Defense:

If Alabama can get back to the national title game, it will be because of their defense. The offense is in good hands, but it will be hard for the Crimson Tide to match their ‘09 numbers after allowing 11.7 points per game and 244.1 total yards per contest. LB Dant’a Hightower and SS Mark Barron are the lone returning starters, but Saban likes the talent he has coming in.

Alabama does have some experience along the defensive line with DT’s Josh Chapman and Luther Davis, who filled in nicely behind starter Terrence Cody. Also, DE’s Marcell Dareus and Cortney Upshaw both played in every game a year ago. Hightower figures to be the best player on this side of the ball as he moves to middle linebacker to replace Rolando McClain. Baron led all SEC players with 7 interceptions last year, so he’s a good one to have back.

SEC Prediction: 1st West Division – Not only do I have the Crimson Tide winning the West, I also have them winning the SEC and getting back to the National Title game where they will also prove victorious. Saban has proven he can recruit and he’s a defensive mastermind, so I cannot see this Alabama defense dropping off too much. Plus, even if they do take a small dip in production, the offense can pick them up with all the key pieces they have returning. This team is loaded again in 2010, and Saban will keep them hungry and motivated so don’t expect a letdown.

Louisville heads into the 2010 season under new head coach Charlie Strong, who was most recently the defensive coordinator at Florida. Strong will try and turn things around at Louisville, as the Cardinals have not finished better than 6-6 in the last three years, and are coming off a miserable 4-8 season. The Cardinals only conference win came against lowly Syracuse by a single point, as Louisville finished up at 1-6 in Big East play. The hope is that it won’t take long for Strong to turn things around, and I think we will see a much more competitive team in 2010, but no where good enough to even think about winning the Big East. Here is quick breakdown of both sides of the ball for the Cardinals, plus my thoughts on where they finish up the year in the Big East.

Offense:

The Cardinals struggled to get much of anything going in the passing game last year, but the hope is that new offensive coordinator Mike Sanford will put some life back into a unit that averaged just 18.1 points a game in 2009.

Heading into the fall it looks as though senior Adam Froman will once again be the starting quarterback for the Cardinals. Froman threw for 1,354 yards and complete 60% of his pass attempts, but had just six touchdown passes to five interceptions. True freshman Dominque Brown will also be considered, and will likely get in the action at some point this season. Either way I look for improved play at this position.

The Cardinals were banged up at running back in 2009, as starter Victor Anderson played in just eight games, but was really only healthy for a few games. Anderson still led the Cardinals in rushing with 473 yards and five touchdowns. Anderson was the Big East Freshman Player of the Year in 2008, and I look for him to be one of the best backs in the Big East this season.

A couple of changes will have to be made in the passing game this season, as the only starter back on the outside is senior Doug Beaumont. It looks as though junior Josh Chichester and senior Tory Pascley will join Beaumont in the starting lineup. The Cardinals also get back senior starting tight end Cameron Graham, who caught 27 passes for 323 yards and two touchdowns last season.

The Cardinals figure to show some solid improvements up front on the offensive line, as they return four starters up front, including both of their starting tackles. If this unit can adjust quickly to the new offensive scheme, the Cardinals are going to surprise a lot of people on this side of the ball, especially if Anderson can return to the same form of 2008.

Defense:

While the offense looks to be much improved this season, there are some big concerns about what the defense will bring to the table in 2010, as the Cardinals have just four starters back on this side of the football.

Up front the Cardinals really have to like what they got out of junior defensive end William Savoy last season, as Savoy led the Cardinals with 5 sacks in just three starts last season. Malcolm Tatum is back at the other defensive end spot, but he hasn’t really provided much of a pass rush. In the middle junior Greg Scruggs returns, and will more than likely be joined by senior Tim High.

The Cardinals only starter back at linebacker is senior weak-side linebacker Brandon Heath, who is solid but nothing real special. The guy to watch out for at linebacker in my opinion is senior middle linebacker Antwon Candy, who has starting experience and could really put up some nice numbers with a full season to work with. Junior Dexter Hayman is the other projected starter on the outside.

In the secondary the Cardinals will have to find three new starters, as senior corner Johnny Patrick is the only starter back from the 2009 season. Fellow senior Anthony Conner is expected to start at the other starting corner spot, while junior Terence Simien and sophomore Shenard Holton take over at the two safety spots. Sophomore Darius Ashley finished second on the team in rushing last year, but has made the switch to corner this spring, and will give the Cardinals a little more talent to work with in the secondary.

Big East Prediction – 7th: The defense is just too soft to predict the Cardinals to finish out of the bottom of the Big East this season. I think the offense will have its moments, but then again there will likely be plenty of struggles as well, as it just takes time to put a new scheme into place. I do believe that this is a much better team than the 2009 squad, but I can’t see them finishing much higher than 6-6.

The LSU Tigers went 9-4 last season, with all four of their losses coming by 10 points or less. And each loss came against a solid team with the likes of Alabama, Florida, Penn State and Ole Miss. But it appears the Tigers may be slipping in head coach Les Miles’ 6th year on the job. Miles is 51-15 at LSU through his first five seasons, but he’ll have his hands full with only six offensive and four defensive starters returning.

Check below to find out much more about the Tigers along with my predictions on how they’ll fare in the SEC West this season. Beating the college football odds in this conference will be much easier once you check out our 2010 SEC football predictions to find out which teams are the strongest heading into the season.

Offense:

Miles wants to get back to pounding the rock with more consistency after the Tigers averaged just 122.8 rushing yards per game last season. Carrying the bulk of the load in the running game will be RB Stevan Ridley, who was forced into action in the final two games last season. But he’ll have plenty of help from Richard Murphy, who is returning from injury. The electric freshman Michael Ford rushed for more than 200 yards in nine games as a senior in high school, and he is their RB of the future.

QB Jordan Jefferson is back to lead the offense after throwing for 17 touchdowns to 7 interceptions as a sophomore. He is a nice talent, but he doesn’t have many proven playmakers to get the ball to in the passing game. WR Terrence Tolliver had 53 receptions for 735 yards last season, but he’s their only proven returnee at wideout. Both starting tackles are back along the offensive line, but the interior will be all new.

Defense:

LSU stayed in ball games last season thanks to a defense that allowed just 16.2 PPG. But only 4 starters return, and the Tigers must replace five of their front seven. Senior DT Lazarius Levingston is a stud, and DT Drake Nevis brings some experience. Sophomore end Sam Montgomery could be the best of the bunch, and the team has praised him throughout spring ball. LB Kelvin Sheppard led the team with 110 tackles a year ago and he’ll be counted upon heavily to help out an inexperienced linebacking corps.

Also back is junior CB Patrick Peterson, who scored two touchdowns last season, one on an interception return and another on a blocked field goal return. He held Alabama’s Julio Jones to three catches, while also holding Georgia’s A.J. Green to just four grabs. Teams will throw away from him this season, putting sophomore Morris Claiborne in a tough spot opposite Peterson. Junior SS Brandon Taylor started nine games last year, and FS Jai Eugene will have to adapt quickly to his new position.

SEC Prediction: 3rd in the West – Both Alabama and Arkansas have many more playmakers on offense than LSU. The Tigers must find a way to put up more points this season after scoring just 24.9 PPG a year ago, and it’s not looking promising. The defense has a lot of talent despite only four returning starters, but the Tigers will be hard-pressed to match the 16.2 PPG they gave up a year ago. I have LSU finishing behind both the Crimson Tide and the Razorbacks in the West this season.

The Sun Belt sees it’s fair share of shootouts, making for one of the more exciting conferences in the country. Troy has won back-to-back titles, but they lose a lot of talent this season which could open the door for a few other teams. Below I list my 2010 Sun Belt football predictions, offering the finishing order of each team within the conference.

Take a look at my overall 2010 college football predictions article to find out which teams have the best shot at a national title this year. It also shows which teams have the best chance to beat the college football odds come season’s end.

Sun Belt Predictions:

1.) Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders – QB Dwight Dasher is back after throwing for 2,789 yards and 23 touchdowns while also rushing for 1,153 more along with 13 scores. He is one of the few returning starting quarterbacks in this conference from an offense that put up 32.0 PPG last year. 4 offensive linemen and most of their playmakers are back as well, so the offense should pick up right where it left off. The defense will be solid with 6 starters back from a unit that gave up 23.7 PPG a year ago. The Blue Raiders get Troy at home on October 5th as well.

2.) Troy Trojans – Only 5 starters return on offense, and they lose Sun Belt Player of the Year in QB Levi Brown. The defense is an even bigger concern from a unit that gave up 29.8 PPG in 2009 with only 3 starters returning. Larry Blakeney has proven he can recruit, and there will be some talent here, just not enough to overcome MTSU.

3.) Louisiana Rajin’ Cajuns – QB Chris Masson is back and the offense should be improved after scoring 22.2 PPG a year ago. The biggest improvement will come from a defense that allowed 30.3 PPG with 7 starters returning. This team went 4-4 in the Sun Belt last year and a 5-3 mark this season will be good enough for third.

4.) Florida Atlantic Owls – FAU gave up 33.8 PPG last year, and the defense must improve with 8 starters back. The defense should be fine with so much returning experience, but the offense is in shambles with only 3 starters back. The Owls must replace their entire offensive line.

5.) Arkansas State Red Wolves – All five starting offensive linemen return, but that’s all the Red Wolves have to work with on offense. And they desperately need new skill players to step up after averaging just 22.7 PPG last year. Only 5 starters are back defensively as well, giving Arkansas State just 10 returning starters to work with which won’t be enough for them to compete with the top tier of the Sun Belt.

6.) Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks – RB Frank Goodin returns after rushing for 1,126 yards and 13 touchdowns, so the offense is in good hands with him. QB Kolton Browning is an elite talent, but the defense is a concern with only 4 returning starters.

7.) North Texas Mean Green – 9 starters return to an offense that put up some big numbers last season, including 40 points against Florida Atlantic and 68 points vs. Western Kentucky. The Mean Green will put up plenty of points on the board, but the defense gave up 35.6 PPG last year and if they cannot improve the stop unit, then they won’t be very competitive this season either. 7 starters return on defense.

8.) Florida International Golden Panthers – The offense only put up 22.9 PPG last year, and once again the offensive line is in shambles and the QB position is a major question mark. Not to mention, the defense is hurting with only 3 starters back. The Panthers defense yielded 35.3 PPG last season.

9.) Western Kentucky Hilltoppers – It cannot get any worse after an 0-12 season, and with 16 starters back, the Hilltoppers should see some improvement. Plus, WKU came close to winning at the end of last year by concluding the ‘09 season with three straight losses by 6 points or less. It’s probably safe to say they will get a win or two this season, but not much more.

This will be Boise State’s last chance to put their mark on the WAC in 2010, as they will be moving to the Mountain West in 2011. Their dominance cannot be denied as the Broncos have won seven of the past eight conference titles. If Boise State were to go undefeated again this season, then they’d be riding a 26-game winning streak and it would be hard for voters to keep them out of the national title game.

Can the Broncos win this conference again this season? Find out below with my 2010 WAC football predictions where I show you a preview of each team along with how they will finish in the final standings. I have also posted my 2010 college football predictions article which lists the top ten teams in the land. Be sure to check it out before trying to beat the NCAA football lines this season.

2010 WAC Predictions:

1.) Boise State – The Broncos have now won 56 straight WAC home games on the Blue Turf. Their home-field advantage cannot be denied. QB Kellen Moore is back along with 10 offensive and 10 defensive starters. Moore is 26-1 as a starter and has thrown for 64 touchdowns compared to 13 interceptions in his time at Boise. It’s hard to bet against this team with so much talent returning.

2.) Nevada – The Wolf Pack had the 6th ranked offense in the land last season at 38.2 PPG scored. 9 starters return to the offense and the Pistol attack should be just as potent this year. The defense has 6 starters back from a unit that gave up 409.3 YPG last season, and unfortunately it doesn’t appear to be any better in 2010. Nevada hosts Boise after losing to the Broncos on the road 33-44 last year, but I don’t think their defense will be up to par with the Broncos which is why they won’t win the WAC.

3.) Fresno State – The Bulldogs return plenty of talent with 8 offensive and 8 defensive starters back. Head coach Pat Hill loves to pound the rock, and though they’ll miss the nation’s leading rusher in Ryan Mathews, Fresno has all 5 offensive linemen returning. But like Nevada, their defense is in shambles after allowing 413.7 YPG a year ago.

4.) Louisiana Tech – The Bulldogs are in trouble without a sure thing at QB and with RB Daniel Porter gone. Whoever takes over at QB and RB will be playing behind a veteran offensive line with all 5 starters back, though. LA Tech should have an average defense with 6 starters back, but they lose key players along the defensive line. Sonny Dykes inherits a team that won’t finish better than fourth in the WAC.

5.) Utah State – QB Diondre Borel is one of the best players in this conference, and he takes care of the ball after throwing just 4 interceptions a year ago. He can do it all, plus he has junior college transfers in WR’s Matt Austin, Dontel Watkins and Xavier Martin to get the ball to as playmakers. The offense put up 29.1 PPG last season and 439.3 YPG and this unit should pick up right where they left off. 9 returning starters on defense is promising, but this unit gave up 34.0 PPG a year ago which did the Aggies in. Utah State could be the sleeper in the WAC if the stop unit can improve.

6.) Hawaii – The Warriors don’t bring back enough experience to be competitive in 2010. Only 4 offensive and 6 defensive starters return. Their pass-happy offense put up 337.0 PYPG a year ago, but it also cost them down in the red zone when they couldn’t run the ball, which led to a -11 turnover margin and just 22.8 PPG scored. The same problems will arise again this season for Hawaii.

7.) Idaho – The Vandals return most of their playmakers from an offense that scored 32.7 PPG a year ago. The problem is that they must replace 4 starting offensive linemen, and try to improve upon a defense that gave up 36.0 PPG. 10 starters return on defense, but unless each player makes significant improvements, the Vandals aren’t likely to stop anybody in 2010, either.

8.) New Mexico State – It’s a battle between the Aggies and SJSU Spartans for dibs on worst team in the conference. Since NMSU gets SJSU at home this season, I expect them to revenge their 13-10 road loss from a year ago. DeWayne Walker vows this team will be better, but the offense must put up more points after scoring 11.5 PPG a year ago. Managing 3 wins with that offense was a big accomplishment last year, but the Aggies 50-year bowl drought won’t end this season.

9.) San Jose State – New head coach Mike MacIntyre has his hands full in his first year on the job. The offense put up just 13.8 PPG, and though 9 starters return, it’s hard to see the Spartans improving much offensively this season. A defense that gave up 34.5 PPG can’t really get any worse, but it will be tested early with road games at Wisconsin and at Alabama. Their lone wins in ‘09 came against NMSU and Cal Poly, and I have a hard time seeing SJSU improving on their 2-win total from a year ago.

The Big East will be adding a few bowl games this season and also axing a few. The Gator, Sun and International bowls will all be axed, making room for the Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando along with the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium. The team that finishes No. 2 in the conference will be playing a team from the Big 12 in one of the most exciting new bowls in the country. There are several new coaches in the Big East this year with Butch Jones taking over at Cincinnati, Charlie Strong at Louisville and Skip Holtz at South Florida.

Below I give my 2010 Big East predictions offering the finishing order of each team, along with a small preview. I have already posted my 2010 college football predictions article which shows you the top ten teams in the land. It will give you the inside track on beating the NCAA football odds this season.

Big East Predictions:

1.) Pittsburgh – The Panthers own three of the best players in the conference in RB Dion Lewis, WR Jonathan Baldwin and DE Greg Romeus. With that kind of talent back, it’s hard to pick against Dave Wannstedt and his Panthers as he clearly has turned around this program.

2.) Connecticut – The Huskies went 8-5 last year, but all five of their losses came by 4 points or less. 8 starters return on both sides of the ball. The offense should be solid with QB Zach Frazier back to guide the ship, and RB Jordan Todman to carry the load after rushing for 1,188 yards and 14 touchdowns last year on an offense that scored 21.2 PPG. The defense gave up 23.6 PPG and should be solid as well.

3.) Cincinnati – Butch Jones knows how to coach up QB’s, as he has done with Dan LeFevour over the past few seasons at Central Michigan. Zach Collaros has a similar skill set as LeFevour, and the Bearcats shouldn’t be far off from the 38.6 PPG they scored a year ago. Only 5 starters are back defensively which will keep the Bearcats from winning this conference for a third straight year.

4.) West Virginia – 9 offensive and 9 defensive starters are back with the most returning experience in the conference. WVU will have to break in a new QB though, which is a serious concern because without a proven signal caller I’m not going to take them to finish higher than fourth in the Big East.

5.) Rutgers – The Scarlet Knights have made a bowl trip in five straight seasons, but their fans want more. QB Tom Savage earned Freshman All-American honors last season, but he’ll need help from a non-existent running game and an offensive line that could not get the job done a year ago. Both factors are concerning, but the defense is in good hands. 6 starters are back from a unit that gave up 17.9 PPG last year.

6.) South Florida – The Bulls lose 7 starters defensively, including DE’s George Selvie and Jason Pierre-Paul to the NFL. Skip Holtz will have his hands full in repairing this defense, but the offense should be fine behind QB P.J. Daniels and all 5 offensive linemen returning.

7.) Louisville – Charlie Strong was a great hire and should help improve the defense right away. The stop unit gave up 371.1 YPG and 26.3 PPG a year ago. But the biggest improvement must come offensively, where the Cardinals scored just 18.1 PPG last season. All 5 starters are back on the offensive line along with senior QB Adam Froman, WR Doug Beaumont and RB Victor Anderson so the potential is there to be much better.

8.) Syracuse – The Orange return just 4 starters offensively, so don’t expect much improvement this season under second-year head coach Doug Marrone. Their defense was respectable at 27.9 PPG allowed in 2009, but I don’t see enough talent on this team as a whole for Syracuse to improve on their 1-6 record in conference play last season.

The Pac-10 has had a big offseason shakeup with the additions of Colorado and Utah for the 2011 season. USC will welcome in a new head coach in Lane Kiffin, as former boss Pete Carroll has left to coach the Seattle Seahawks in the National Football League. The Oregon football program has to be somewhat disgusted by the fact that QB Jeremiah Masoli has been suspended for the season, and RB LaMichael James has been suspended for the season-opener. Not to mention former head coach and first-year athletic director, Mike Bellotti, has stepped down.

With all that’s gone on, all that really matters right now is what happens on the field. I give my 2010 Pac-10 football predictions below to show you where these teams finish in the final standings. Also be sure to check out my 2010 college football predictions article which shows which teams will finish inside the Top-10 come season’s end. Will any Pac-10 teams make it? Find out with my selections, and I’ll also have you beating the NCAA football odds this season with winning picks each week.

2010 Pac-10 Predictions:

1.) USC – The Trojans may only return 11 starters, but what they have coming back and coming in makes them the most talented team in the Pac-10. And talent usually wins out, plus QB Matt Barkley is a year older and ready to lead this offense in his sophomore campaign. Head coach Lane Kiffin has instilled a new hunger in this team with an emphasis on hard work. And they get Oregon at home, which is likely the game that decides which team wins the conference.

2.) Oregon – The questions are quarterback are the reason I am not picking the Ducks to win the Pac-10, because they certainly have plenty of talent everywhere else. Senior Nate Costa or sophomore Darron Thomas have the daunting task of replacing the suspended Masoli. The defense returns 8 starters and plenty of speed, and this unit will have to carry them. The offense also returns all 9 starters, including their electrifying RB LaMichael James and all 5 offensive linemen. A road loss at USC will have the Ducks finishing second.

3.) Washington – QB Jake Locker and RB Chris Polk lead an experienced offense with 9 returning starters. The Huskies will put up plenty of points to win, but whether or not they make a bowl game depends on a defense that returns 6 starters. They lost two players to the NFL in Donald Butler and Daniel Te’o-Nesheim, and both Kalani Aldrich and Everrette Thompson who are projected starters each missed spring ball with injuries. The questions surrounding their defense will keep the Huskies from finishing in the Top-2.

4.) Oregon State – It’s hard to count this team out considering their have two of the biggest playmakers in the conference returning in RB Jacquizz Rodgers and WR James Rodgers, who are brothers. In fact, the Beavers return 17 starters in all, but one position they do not return anyone is at quarterback. They will get USC and Oregon at home late in the season, but I don’t think their QB play will be up to par and it will ultimately cost them a chance to win the Pac-10.

5.) California – The offense should do its job with QB Kevin Riley and all 5 offensive linemen returning from a year ago. Head coach Jeff Tedford has no problem finding running backs, and Shane Vereen should adequately replace Jahvid Best in the backfield. The Bears will need playmakers to step up at WR, because Cal only put up 24 points or more three times in conference play last year. They also have big questions at all three levels of the defense with only 6 starters returning to the stop unit. A middle-of-the-pack finish for the Bears is inevitable.

6.) Stanford – The Cardinal will have to replace 1,800-plus rusher Toby Gerhart which will not be easy. They do have QB Andrew Luck back from an offense that was solid threw the air at 225.2 PYPG while putting up 35.5 PPG in the process. They have 8 starters returning offensively, but the defense only has 6 players back from a unit that gave up 402.7 YPG. Stanford will score points, but it won’t do them a whole lot of good when they won’t be able to stop anybody.

7.) Arizona – The Wildcats put up 27.4 PPG last season and welcome back 9 starters on offense. QB Nick Foles and RB Nate Grigsby, two key pieces, are each returning. Arizona should score points, but what once was a reliable defense season after season has several question marks entering 2010. Only 4 starters return, and the Wildcats will have to replace five starters along the front seven which will likely having them losing the battle at the line of scrimmage against some very good offensive lines in the Pac-10.

8.) UCLA – The Bruins did make progress in Rick Neuheisel’s second year, going from 4-8 in 2008 to 7-6 in 2009 while beating Temple in the EagleBank Bowl. Expectations from the third-year coach are to win at least 8 games this year, but the schedule is daunting. They’ll have to face Texas, Houston and Kansas State in non-conference play. The Bruins return just 7 starters on offense and 5 on defense. They need QB Kevin Prince to finally blossom, and they will be looking for a better running game courtesy of the newly-installed Revolver offense by OC Norm Chow, who stole the idea from Nevada’s Pistol scheme. UCLA’s backbone last year was their defense, but they lose too much talent to be able to perform up to the level they did a year ago, allowing 21.2 PPG.

9.) Arizona State – The same problem that arose a year ago is back to bite the Sun Devils again in 2010. They aren’t going to be able to improve on the 22.3 PPG they scored last season with only 4 starters back on offense. They have to break in a new QB, and offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone has a tall task ahead in trying to get this unit to put more points on the scoreboard. ASU should stay competitive thanks to a defense that returns 7 starters from a unit that gave up 297.6 YPG and 21.6 PPG last season. Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year, MLB Vonaze Burfict, is back to lead the defense along with DT Lawrence Guy.

10.) Washington State – Paul Wulff is just 3-22 in his first two seasons with the Cougars. He does appear to have as much depth and experience as he’s had in his three years heading into 2010, but unfortunately the talent isn’t quite there to yield positive results just yet. There are no proven playmakers on offense, and the defense has holes everywhere. QB Jeff Tuel is their best hope as he flashed his potential by throwing for 354 yards against California, but the offensive line couldn’t keep any QB upright as the Cougars allowed 53 sacks last season. The defense couldn’t stop anyone either, giving up 2,837 rushing yards in 2009. The good news is that this team can’t get much worse, but the bad news is that even a slight improvement won’t get them out of the Pac-10 cellar.

The Arizona Wildcats football team is going to be wearing their all-red jerseys this weekend when they play Oregon, and they want all of their fans to wear Red as well, making the game a “Red Out.” Last year in this matchup Arizona ended Oregon’s national title hopes by taking down the No. 2 team in the nation on a nationally televised Thursday night game.

ESPN will have their attention focused on this contest again this year. For the first time in school history ESPN College GameDay will be on the Arizona campus to broadcast live from the UA mall from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday morning. Fans showing up for the broadcast can expect a large, raucous crowd clamoring to get some airtime with their hand-made sign. Will Lee Corso don the mascot head of Wilbur Wildcat or Donald Duck.

The Wildcats have a lot at stake here as a win would keep them in the hunt for a share of the Pac-10 title while a loss would make it tougher for them to play in a top-notch bowl game. Oregon will be the toughest team that Arizona has faced this year.

If you are going to do any football wagering on this game or any other this weekend then make sure you take advantage of the $500 signup bonus being offered to our readers by BetUS Sportsbook. Of course if you want a better chance of winning those bets you are going to want to sign up for the football picks offered by our top football handicappers. They do a great job of breaking down the football spreads each week so their clients have the best chance of ending up on top.

How ugly was that hit on Josh Cribbs last night by Ravens defensive end Dwan Edwards. Edwards should probably be suspended and fined as this was the last play of the game, and Quinn threw a pass to Cribbs, who then began to run and and then lateralled the ball to tight end Robert Royal. Then unbeknownst to Cribbs, he was targeted by Edwards who went for Cribbs’ throat and smashed his arm right into Cribbs’ head, causing him to lie motionless on the field once the game was over.

Was this a retaliation play by the Ravens’ Edwards because Browns QB Brady Quinn was just trying to make a block earlier in the game and went a little too low and hit Ravens LB Terrell Suggs’ knees? Probably even though Quinn is a quarterback who normally doesn’t block big defensive players on a regular basis, so even after watching the reply of his block on Suggs, it looks like he was trying to block to the best of his ability without trying to hurt himself or another.

On the other hand, Edwards’ hit on Cribbs looked to be a direct result of him going after Cribbs and attacking his head rather than his body. This led to Cribbs being carted off the field and being taken to a local Cleveland hospital immediately. No word yet on the status of Cribbs’ injury, but Browns coach Eric Mangini did tell the media that Cribbs did have feeling and movement in all of his extremities, but you have to wonder if Cribbs’ season is finished, leaving the already struggling Browns without their best player.

Tom Edringon had a nice article on the recap of the Rutgers/South Florida game Thursday night. Basically it boils down to how terrible South Florida played, and how you can expect those kinds of performances out of the Bulls on Thursday night (1-6 now on that day of the week). The team also should stay away from Rutgers as they have now lost four straight to the Scarlet Knights.

The final score was 31-0 on a chilly night in Piscataway, all Scarlet Knights and it could have and should have been worse. This was the first shutout South Florida has had in a regular season game. The defense at least played well in the first half to keep the score 13-0, but then the levy broke in the second half. Two interceptions, two fumbles, a blocked punt, a muffed punt return, it all added up to a night to forget for USF and its fans. It was embarrassing for a team that was ranked going into the game. USF only managed 159 yards total offense. There was no rushing attack for the Bulls. BJ Daniels was sacked seven times. It was ugly and what makes it worse is they had a bye week to prepare.

Some of our football handicappers were all over this game. Steve Merril had the under which cashed easily. John Martin, Freddy Wills, and the Black Widow were all on Rutgers. If you did your football betting by following any of these guys, you didn’t have to sweat at all last night.
