The 2009 NFL season has been absolutely dreadful for head coach Eric Mangini and the Cleveland Browns. The Brownies are only 1-7 straight up with their only win coming against Buffalo with a final score of just 6-3. Cleveland is also just 3-5 against the spread, losing by an average margin of 16 points per game. Things won’t get any easier for the Brownies this week when an angry Baltimore Raven team comes to town. The Ravens are just 4-4 SU but are on the plus side for their backers at 5-3 ATS. Baltimore is coming off an embarrassing 17-7 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, a game in which their offense struggled to get anything going at all. Odds makers opened this line at Baltimore minus 10 but the betting public likes the Ravens’ chances as they have moved the line up to 10.5 and even 11 at some off shore sports books.
It has been a bit of a rollercoaster type season thus far for the Baltimore Ravens. They got out to a 3-0 start, covering all 3 games and then went on a 3 game losing skid to put them at 3-3. Baltimore got over the .500 mark by pummeling the Denver Broncos 30-7 on November 1st and then lost last week to Cincinnati to even their record up at 4-4 overall. The defense hasn’t been as dominant as it was a year ago but still rank 9th in points allowed. The biggest concern has been in the secondary that is giving up an average of 225 yards a game through the air. Fortunately for the Ravens this week, they will be going up against a team that can’t any consistency out of their quarterback position.
The Browns made Brady Quinn the opening day starter but after poor play benched him in week 3 in favor of Derek Anderson. Anderson didn’t fare much better than Quinn as he threw just two touchdown passes and nine interceptions. The poor play of Anderson has made head coach, Eric Mangini decide to make Quinn the starter once again. Cleveland’s offensive play has been a complete disaster in 2009 as they are averaging just 9.8 points per game. The Browns are also only averaging 221.1 yards of offense per game which ranks them second to last in the NFL. Their biggest playmaker is their punt and kick returner, Joshua Cribbs. Unfortunately, Cribbs hasn’t established himself as a wide receiver but that’s a difficult thing to do when you don’t have a quarterback who can get you the ball.
Brady Quinn will have his hands full going up against an attacking style defense like the Baltimore Ravens, despite the fact they haven’t been as outstanding as they were a year ago. However, the Browns have proven they can’t move the ball against anybody all year long. Cleveland is also 1-6-1 ATS in their last 8 home games and just 3-10-1 ATS in their last 14 overall. Things better get turned around quick or Mangini may find himself unemployed along with newly fired general manager, George Kokinis.
