Last season, the New York Jets sneaked into the playoffs with a 9-7 record. It’s not how you get there, but what you do when you get there that counts, and the Jets made last season’s playoff appearance count. They defeated Cincinnati and San Diego on the road before losing to Indianapolis in the AFC title game. Now, revitalized by the in-your-face confidence of head coach Rex Ryan, the Jets enter the 2010 season with their sights set on the Super Bowl.

Offense: Quarterback Mark Sanchez was not the savior Jets fans were hoping for in his rookie season, throwing just 12 touchdown strikes with 20 interceptions on his way to a poor 63.0 passer rating. But the Jets allowed him to play through his struggles, gaining him vital experience that will speed up the learning curve.

While the Jets will still rely on the NFL’s best running attack, Sanchez must show improvement in order to make a Super Bowl run. His play in the postseason has the organization very optimistic that he can take the necessary steps. The Jets have also surrounded him with talented wideout like Braylon Edwards and Santonio Holmes to help him succeed.

Led by one of the best offensive lines in the NFL, running the football will remain New York’s top priority. The Jets’ running game led the league in 2009, averaging 172.2 yards per game.

Thomas Jones is gone, but Shonn Greene and LaDainian Tomlinson have what it takes to keep the Jets near the top of the league in rushing offense. Greene appears poised for a breakout year after rushing for 135 yards and 128 yards respectively in playoff wins over the Bengals and Chargers.

Defense: New York boasted the No. 1 ranked defense in the NFL in 2009, allowing only 14.8 points and 252.3 yards per game. The scary thing is Rex Ryan’s aggressive 3-4 scheme could be even better in 2010 with the additions of Jason Taylor, Antonio Cromartie and Kyle Parker.

The Jets will also benefit from the return of Kris Jenkins, who missed the second half of last season with an injury. He and end Shaun Ellis anchor a solid front.

The linebackers are the heart and soul of the 3-4, and the Jets have some good ones in Bart Scott, David Harris and Calvin Pace. Now Taylor steps in to add more depth.

While the Jets boasted the No. 1 ranked passing defense in the NFL last season, they were exposed by Peyton Manning in the AFC championship game. That led them to bring in Cromartie and Parker, shoring up a secondary that already houses star Darrelle Revis.

Prediction: 1st AFC East – With a top notch defense, and a strong running game, I like New York’s chances in the East. If Sanchez can take care off the football and make plays when he needs to, the Jets have the potential to make a serious Super Bowl run. Find out which teams I have winning the other seven divisions in my 2010 NFL predictions.
